Halloween

Halloween (or Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday observed on October 31, which commonly includes activities such as trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, or watching horror films.

The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day(Allerheiligen).  All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested until 1556. It is more typically linked to a Celtic festival.  Halloween's origins date back some 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.  Samhain, or Halloween, is also known as All Hallow's Eve, Hallowmas, Day of the Dead, Third Harvest, Hallowstide, and Celtic New Year. Sometimes called the Witches' New Year's Eve, the dark half of the year commences on October 31st.   The name of the festival historically kept by the Gaels and Celts in the British Isles is derived from Old Irish and is supposed to mean "summer's end".

The 2b second form NMS learned about Halloween traditions made a Halloween lamp and played a party game called Bobbing the Apple.
